Of all the many interiors I’ve visited, the magnificent building in which Eddy Jambers runs his Compagnie Magnifiek Belge is unsurpassable
Antwerp’s reputation for creative fertility was developed by the likes of Eddy Jambers, who was dealing in vintage design back when Dries Van Noten was still a nipper.
Jambers unbinds objects and materials from their original context and grants them a new life.
In (Architect Vincent) Van Duysen’s view, the coolest place to stay is above antiques dealer Eddy Jambers’s shop, Compagnie Magnifiek Belge.
Vintage antiquarian Eddy Jambers gave this monumental building a new life and came up with this extraordinary interior, which is also used for film sets.
Downstairs you walk through his vintage shop, resembling an art gallery. On the roof he put the cabin of a large barge. From there, he looks over the city and can just see a boat passing by.
It’s like a castle in the city, with high ceilings and majestic proportions. And yet it is surprisingly intimate and very mysterious. In it we recognize the hand of the builder, who invented the whole decor. The monumental statue of sculptor Mark Jambers.
In the rooms, the bed of Gio Ponti, you find yourself in a boat. Far right we catch a glimpse of the art deco bathroom. In the reception lounge in the Renaissance style hangs a mysterious light.
The stylish room is located just beneath the flight deck of the barge. It has a terrace and a bathroom with shower.
